The College of Education seeks a Director for the Bureau of Educational Research which is a full-time academic professional position reporting to the Associate Dean for Research. The mission of the Bureau of Educational Research, a service unit in the College, is to enrich the research culture in the College of Education by supporting interdepartmental or interdisciplinary collaboration; nurturing faculty research, especially for those who are at critical passages in their careers; and providing support for grant writing and liaisons with funding agencies. It also provides a variety of interpretive and communicative services among College researchers and the wider Campus and external research community, funders and other participants in the educational research enterprise and University research infrastructure. The Bureau includes three primary service units - The Research Opportunities Office (ROO), the Office of School University Research Relations (OSURR), and the Human Subjects Review Committee. Job Duties
Working within a team environment, the Director provides direct support to the research infrastructure for the College. Major responsibilities include consultation with faculty and collaborators to conceptualize and submit research proposals, including budget planning; identification of funding sources; education of faculty and students regarding external funding issues; and communication with campus, community and agency offices. The position demands an understanding of faculty research interests for identification of appropriate funding opportunities, budget development, and compliance issues at all levels, including the College, the University of Illinois, and federal/state and private funding agencies. The Director also oversees and assists with school-university relations, manages content planning for data-driven reports of faculty activity, web and print publications, and supervises the planning and organization of research seminars and internal funding opportunities.
Qualifications
A bachelor's degree in education, or related social sciences field is required, with an advanced degree preferred. In addition, five or more years work experience in sponsored research services is required. Essential skills and abilities include exceptional communication skills, demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative, team environment, knowledge of funding agencies and university policies, knowledge of social science research and human subjects compliance, and a commitment to work consultatively with faculty to address the content of diverse research fields related to the mission of the College of Education. Also needed are strong analytical, writing, and presentation skills, as well as the ability to direct data content management processes.
A demonstrated ability to manage academic professionals, clerical workers and graduate research assistants is important.
Proficiency or ability to quickly become proficient in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Access and other database software, as well as electronic funding and other collaborative interfaces are highly desirable.

Salary and benefits are competitive. The proposed starting date is July 16, 2009 or as soon as possible after the closing date.
