DESCRIPTION

The Council on Teacher Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is seeking a full-time Assistant Director/Certification Officer.  The Assistant Director/Certification Officer is responsible for all aspects of teacher, school leader, and school service personnel candidate certification on the Urbana campus, and also for assisting the Executive Director with the management and operation of the Council on Teacher Education (CoTE) office. The Assistant Director/Certification officer reports directly to the Executive Director of CoTE.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  1. monitor proposed legislation and ISBE rules and regulations and develop policies and procedures  to assure campus compliance with state requirements for candidate certification;
  2. speak for the campus on matters pertaining to P-12 certification, serve as campus liaison to the ISBE Educator Certification division, and provide input to the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and State Teacher Certification Board (STCB) on certification issues;
  3. initiate and/or facilitate and review for CoTE program revisions for all programs leading to P-12 certification
  4. monitor candidate progress in each of the 32 professional education programs to ensure that candidates have met all requirements for state certification;
  5. recommend candidates for certification to ISBE and STCB;
  6. monitor course and program changes in all 32 professional education programs to ensure compliance with state requirements for candidate certification;
  7. design and implement strategies for communicating essential certification information to candidates, advisors, program coordinators, former students, prospective students, and faculty;
  8. oversee processing of required criminal background checks for all certification candidates and resolve problems as they arise
  9. serve on ISBE and professional association certification committees;
  10. serve on appropriate campus committees (e.g. Senate Educational Policy);
  11. act on candidate petitions for waivers of state and campus requirements;
  12. prepare state and federally required reports;
  13. manage the certification division of CoTE (academic and support personnel, systems, budget, functions);
  14. assist the Executive Director in developing annual budgets, strategic plans, and annual reports for CoTE; and
  15. oversee the operation of CoTE in the absence of the Executive Director.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:  Master's degree in education or a related field; 2 years of administrative experience in department, college, or campus level office with responsibility for staff supervision and records maintenance; excellent verbal and written communication skills; experience in developing and implementing policy; experience in transcript evaluation; ability to exercise good judgment and make decisions independently; detail oriented.

 

Preferred: Experience with educator certification; knowledge of campus administrative structure and record keeping procedures; facility with BANNER system, familiarity with DARS.

 

SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
