Online Programs - Master of Education (EdM)

The College of Education's Online Programs are grounded in our commitment to academic rigor, professionalism and flexibility. They allow international students to earn an Illinois education even when they are unable to travel to the U.S. to study.

One of the major benefits of Online Programs is that they enable educators from around the world to exchange and discuss issues of mutual concern. Completion of Online Programs normally requires two years of part-time study, and involves both synchronous and asynchronous learning activities.

Our Online Programs are based on the assumption that learning is a complex event that cannot be explained with a single theory. Instead, learning environments should be based on instructional principles derived from multiple theories of learning. The design of our online programs builds on a conceptual framework that looks beyond the traditional paradigm of instruction and is founded on core learning theories (Contextual Learning, Social Learning, Active Learning, Reflective Learning) and guiding principles (sound instructional design, multimodal content, collaborative interaction, attention to individual differences, enhanced student motivation, avoidance of information overload).

The use of multiple learning theories and guiding principles in the design of our online programs promotes and enhances instructor/student interaction, including through the employment of synchronous and asynchronous sessions using Elluminate and Moodle technologies.
