Innovative research is a hallmark of the Department of Human Resource Education. In addition to individual research projects, faculty members and graduate students engage in collaborative efforts to develop cutting-edge research, engage with constituencies around the world, and disseminate research. Members of the department also advance understanding of our field through involvement in professional research-oriented organizations.

Research Centers
- National Center for Engineering and Technology Education (NCETE)
Scott Johnson (Professor) is Research Director for NCETE and Principal Investigator at the University of Illinois on this National Science Foundation-funded national project. The goal of NCETE is to build capacity in technology education to apply engineering principles at the high school level. Five NCETE doctoral fellows currently reside in the HRE Department. - National Research Center for Career and Technical Education (NRCCTE)
The HRE Department has been a long-term partner in NRCCTE, funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Steven Aragon (Associate Professor and Interim Head), Scott Johnson (Professor and Head), and James Leach (Professor) have conducted research and provided professional development that aims to improve career and technical education in the United States.

Andrea Ellinger (Associate Professor) is the co-editor for this book series, published by the American Management Association.
Online Learning Research
- HRE Online Research
Since its inception in 1998, our department's online program, HRE Online, has served as a laboratory for conducting applied research about online teaching and learning.

- Academy of Human Resource Development (AHRD)
Associate Professors Andrea Ellinger and Peter Kuchinke serve on the board of this international organization, which provides the largest research-oriented forum for HRD. - Association for Career and Technical Education Research (ACTER)
Steven Aragon (Associate Professor) serves as President-elect for ACTER, an organization for researchers who focus on work-related education and training in secondary schools, community and technical colleges, private sector training programs, and other workforce development settings. - The University Council for Workforce and Human Resource Education (UCWHRE)
Scott Johnson (Professor) is President of UCWHRE, an organization that provides leadership for career and technical education and human resource development. Additionally, the HRE Department is a founding member member of UCWHRE.
