Degree Conferrals

University of Illinois confers degrees at four different times:

  • December
  • May
  • August (Masters Only)
  • October (Doctoral Only)

To have your degree conferred, you must add your name to the pending degree list when you are on your final term of course work. Your requirements are then reviewed through a degree audit process. If you have successfully completed all necessary requirements, then you are added to the degree conferral list and your degree is conferred. This means you have officially graduated. Your diploma will be mailed to you.

Graduation Commencement

University of Illinois has one graduation commencement (caps, gowns, good cheer) held each May. There are two ceremonies: a College of Education ceremony and a University of Illinois campus ceremony. You are welcome to participate in both; however, most graduate students only choose the College of Education ceremony.

IMPORTANT: You are required to register for the commencement ceremony:

To do this, access the following link and follow the directions provided on the College of Education Convocation Web Site.

Coursework Completed in June 2009

Those who graduate in June 2009 have two options to consider, as you are on the August 2009 Degree Conferral list.

Option 1:

The College of Education allows students who complete coursework in the summer and are on the August degree list to petition to "walk" in the May 2009 commencement ceremony. Since you have not officially graduated (as you still need to complete the degree requirement in the summer), your name is not listed in the commencement booklet. Many August degree students petition to do this rather than waiting 10 months to participate in commencement ceremonies. To participate in the May 2009 commencement, you will need to complete a petition to walk.

Option 2:

You will be invited to participate in the May 2010 Graduation Commencement ceremony.

Coursework Completed in September 2009 or December 2009

You are on the December 2009 Degree Conferral list and will be invited to attend the May 2010 Graduation Commencement.

Coursework Completed in March 2010

You are on the May 2010 Degree Conferral list and will be invited to attend the May 2010 Graduation Commencement.
