Service Description

"User Web Folders" are user-specific folders for individuals associated with the College of Education. The content of these folders is available from the web through a user-specific URL. The original demand for this service came from a desire to make web publishing and ePortfolio development easier than was currently available from campus.

Eligibility

All faculty and staff associated with the College of Education are eligible for "User Web Folders". Students can acquire User Web Folders by being in a College of Education course that officially uses User Web Folders, or by having a faculty sponsor who has been trained as an instructor for "User Web Folders".

Features

"User Web Folders" currently include the following features:

  • The ability to edit the content of your web folder through native filesharing on both Macintosh and Windows.
  • 100MB quota.
  • Redirects: A redirect redirects requests for your web pages on the COE Web Server to another server.

Limitations

  • Content: Files stored in User Web Folders should be limited to materials you expect to be viewed or downloaded through web browsers. Executable files and applications are explicitly prohibited.
  • Only you and the server administrators have write access to your folder. For solutions to group editing of web sites, contact the College of Education webmaster .

Support

  • Documentation on "User Web Folders" is available at /oet/web/userwebs/
  • Instructors: Documentation, training, procedures and an administration application were designed to provide instructors with the tools and knowledge they need to provide a low level of support for their students.
  • Limited support for User Web Folders is available at the Instructional Computing Laboratory (ICL) in room 10 of the Education Building. At the ICL, lab consultants will be able to help you to access your User Web Folder and provide limited troubleshooting.
  • Advanced issues will be addressed by the College Webmaster .

Site Longevity

A User Web Folder will remain on a College of Ed web server and be accessible over the web indefinitely. The User Web Folder is, however, subject to removal under certain conditions including the following:

  • The user may request that the User Web Folder be removed.
  • Any User Web Folder which is deemed "inactive" is subject to removal. As currently defined, "inactive" folders are ones associated with individuals who are no longer members of the College of Education and whose site has not received a page view in over twelve months.
  • Any User Web Folder which is used for purposes other than those deemed appropriate by the College of Education is subject to removal.

WriteAccess

You will have write access to your User Web Folder until your campus Active Directory (AD) account expires.  Your AD account expires when your netID expires, the policy for which is set by the University.  To view this policy, select "Authorized Users and Services" from the CIO's index of policies and refer to the last column, "netID reserved".  As of this writing, netID expiration (and, therefore, write access to one's User Web Folder) will occur two years after you leave the University if you are a student, and one year after if you are a staff member.
