Mission

The Center for Technologies in Teaching & Learning seeks to increase the media skills and usage among faculty, staff, and students within the College of Education and/or affiliated with its activities. The Center is a space where visitors can design, produce, deliver, and assess media projects related to teaching, learning, and research. The Center believes in the power of media forms to communicate ideas, expand perceptions, increase perspectives, and alter beliefs.

Facility

The Center for Technologies in Teaching & Learning is a well-equipped training and support facility located in Room 10 of the College of Education building. The facility is open to faculty, staff, and students affiliated with the College of Education and/or its activities. The Center is open and staffed from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Center is equipped, as is the entire College of Education building, with access to the UIUC wireless network.

Staff

A knowledgeable member of the CIO staff is located in The Center during operational hours. The Center staff are available to consult, train, and support visitors. Consultation with The Center staff can assist in getting a project moving by resolving project goals and creating a production plan. Training can take on the form of impromptu one-on-one assistance, scheduled small group sessions, and College-wide training events. The Center's personnel are knowledgeable and experienced in many areas of media including video, imaging, audio, website design, and presentation applications.

Services

The Center for Technologies in Teaching & Learning is designed to meet the needs of visitors in the design, production, delivery, and assessment of successful media projects related to teaching, learning, and research. The Center offers access to equipment, software, consultation, training, support, and production services.

Training and Support

One-on-one, small group, and large group experiences are available in Room 10.

The Center maintains a collection of current books on various media applications for use by visitors. Training and support materials are available in both online and printed formats.

The staff also hosts major College events such as iFairs and smaller venues such as showcases of the latest media tools.

Media Production Stations

The Center contains PC-based and Macintosh-based media productions stations. These computer stations have hardware and software to assist in the areas of digital video, imaging, and audio. The stations also have the traditional applications such as Internet Explorer and Microsoft Office. All production stations have an Internet connection for easy assess to the Web, College of Education storage servers, the College of Education's Quicktime Streaming Server (QTSS), and other online systems.

Video Hardware and Software

All production stations are equipped with Firewire ports allowing users to transfer video footage from camera to computer and connect other Firewire devices such as iPods and Firewire drives. VCRs and Firewire-RCA transfer boxes are also available. Macintosh-based production stations offer iDVD burners. PC-based production stations have Windows Movie Maker. Macintosh-based production stations offer iMovie3 and iDVD. Both editing applications are quick to learn and easy to use. Cleaner5 and Quicktime Pro are also available.

Imaging Hardware and Software

Flatbed scanners and digital cameras are available to assist users in the capture. Printers and CD burners are present as well. Adobe Photoshop is offered to allow visitors to create and manipulate images. Adobe ImageReady is available for advanced needs such as image compression and the creation of animations. The Macintosh production stations feature iPhoto software.

Microphones and headphones are available in The Center. The Macintosh production stations feature iTunes software.

Planning and Review Space

In addition to media production stations, The Center offers spacious planning and work areas. Large tables provide visitors with a location to plan, develop, and review. The projection unit, smart board, and large pull-down screen are available to assist in these and other activities.

Production

While empowerment of visitors is a primary role, The Center is also active in production activities. Rather than train visitors to create the media themselves, Center staff can plan and produce media for the client if the need arises. All projects must be reviewed and approved by Center staff before being undertaken. Depending on the general nature and specific demands of the project, a charge-back to the department may be required.

Transmission

The creation of media is only a portion of the support offered visitors. The Center also provides the tools to deliver created content to target audiences. DVD burners, CD burners, and VCRs are effective offline solutions to deliver content. Projects that require online modes can take advantage of the access to the College of Education's Quicktime Streaming Server.

Portfolio

The Center for Technologies in Teaching & Learning provides visitors with samples and summaries of select projects that illustrate the capabilities of the center and the innovations of its users.

Policies

The Center for Technologies in Teaching & Learning is a location that serves many visitors and supports many projects. Center policies help ensure that all users are able to plan and complete projects in a timely, efficient manner.
