SHADOW COPY FEATURE NOW AVAILABLE ON COLLEGE FILE SERVER
Ever accidentally delete or overwrite a file? Windows users can now recover previous versions of their files on the file server with a click of a mouse button. An interactive demonstration will be shown at the October 5, 2004 Open Forum session, “Net Files: Benefits of Network File Services for Individuals and Groups” at 11:30am in room 242.

WHAT IS SHADOW COPY?
Earlier this year, the College of Education file server (files.ed.uiuc.edu) was upgraded, making available for the first time a new end-user feature called Shadow Copy. The Shadow Copy feature gives users the ability to recover, on their own, files they accidentally erase or overwrite. “Shadow copies” of files are made twice a day, allowing you to select the right version for you.

NOTE: The Shadow Copy feature is already built in to Windows XP but not in previous versions of Windows. To request installation of Shadow Copy on Windows 2000, Windows ME or older versions, please call the User Services at 244-6053.

HOW TO USE IT
With the Microsoft Shadow Copy client installed, Windows users can restore a file by:
1. On a file or folder on the file server, right click on it to bring up a menu
2. Select Properties on the menu
3. Select the Previous Version tab in the Properties window
4. If available, select the desired point in time to restore.
5. Finally, click on the appropriate restoration action (View, Copy, or Restore)

SHADOW COPY SCHEDULE
The Shadow Copy service creates point in time copies daily at 7am and 12pm on the College file server.

WHERE TO GET HELP
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free stop by User Services in room 1, or contact them at 244-6053 or via email.
